Internship Position:

Early Scribes Literacy Camp Intern

Organization: NC EmpowerUp

Location: 500 W. 5th Street, Suite 800, located in downtown Winston-Salem, NC 27101 (some tasks can be done remotely)

Duration:  5 weeks -Staff/Parent & Cohort Meeting 5/29/2025, camp days: Monday-Thursday 8:30am- 4pm (6/2/2025 –7/3/2025)

Hours: 24 hours per week- (120 hours total for the internship)

Compensation:  $15.50


Position Overview:

NC EmpowerUp is seeking a passionate and motivated intern to join our Early Scribes Literacy Camp team. The intern will work closely with our Executive Director to support middle school students in a creative writing camp, assist with editing their stories, coordinate with illustrators, and help with administrative tasks. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a youth literacy program, instructing creative writing, publishing, social media, and event coordination.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with Early Scribes Camp: Support students during writing classes and workshops, offering guidance on their writing projects and helping them brainstorm ideas.
  • Editing and Story Development: Assist with reviewing and editing the students' stories, providing constructive feedback, and ensuring high-quality content.
  • Coordination with Illustrators: Communicate with and support illustrators who will bring the students' stories to life through visuals. Help track progress and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Create Printing Files: Assist in designing interior book pages and prepare files for submission to the printer.
  • Administrative Support: Handle communication with parents regarding camp activities, schedules, and updates. Maintain organized files and records.
  • Social Media and Documentation: Assist with social media posts, including photos, reels, and stories, to document the camp’s events and celebrate student achievements. Knowledge of graphic design platforms such as, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Canva is preferred.
  • Event Coordination: Help with setting up and breaking down spaces before and after classes and assist with logistics during public events hosted by the organization.
  • Independent Tasks: Complete assigned tasks independently outside of class hours, ensuring deadlines are met.


Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in creative writing and youth education.
  • Enjoys working with middle school-aged students and fostering creativity.
  • Knowledge of Canva for creating social media content and design work preferred.
  • Experience with graphic design is a plus but not required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects with deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to follow instructions and work collaboratively.
  • Must be available to work in-person on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm, with the ability to work remotely during the remaining hours as required.
  • Must have own transportation and be willing to run occasional errands, if asked.
