Thank you for your decision to apply for your child’s participation in the upcoming Summer cohort of the Early Scribes program! We are thrilled to have the opportunity to potentially work with your child as they explore their creative writing talents and gain invaluable skills in both writing and entrepreneurship.
Early Scribes aims to:
- Teach the creative writing process using the Early Scribes curriculum.
- Ensure that every participant exits the program as a published author, with full ownership of their book rights.
- Introduce career opportunities in creative industries through lived experience speakers.
- Teach entrepreneurship to help authors market and sell their own books.
The program will begin on June 2nd, 2025 and continue through June 26th, 2025. Classes will be held Monday thru Thursday mornings from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM in downtown Winston-Salem. (Breakfast and snacks are provided)
Here’s what’s in store at Early Scribes Summer Camp:
- A custom creative writing curriculum where students plan, write, and publish their own book
- Inspiring lived experience speakers who will share about their careers in creative industries that revolve around literacy
- Field trips to inspiring creative spaces where imagination comes alive
- Entrepreneurial fun where students learn how to market and sell their own published work!

Due to limited space, there is a selection process, and all applications will be carefully evaluated. Once the cohort has been selected, we will notify all applicants of their status.
Participation fees for the Early Scribes Literacy Summer Camp are $275 and are due when your accept a spot in the camp for your child. This fee is a small contribution toward covering all aspects of the program, including curriculum instruction, a workbook (printed or digital), professional book illustrations, graphic design for interior pages and covers, all necessary supplies, and breakfast and healthy snacks during classes. Because it is a goal of NC EmpowerUp to make our camps accessible without cost being a barrier, scholarships are available.

We believe this innovative program will offer significant benefits to young creatives, helping them build foundational skills that will serve them well in their future career paths. We’re excited to embark on this creative journey with your child and look forward to seeing what they will achieve.
Application must be completed by a parent or guardian on behalf of a middle school student.

The program will begin on February 18th and continue through March 27th. Classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM in Winston-Salem.

Because of limited space, there is a selection process, and we will carefully evaluate all applications. Once the cohort has been selected, we will notify all applicants about their status.
Due to generous donations for our spring program, we can now offer partial scholarships to all participants, bringing the cost of the program to $525. This fee covers all aspects of the program, including curriculum instruction, a workbook, professional book illustrations, graphic design for the interior pages and cover, all necessary supplies, and healthy snacks during classes. Payments can be made in two installments: the first $262.50 during the onboarding process after your child is offered a spot in the cohort, and the remaining $262.50 by March 7th.
